Fire Protection of FRPs

Tyfo® Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) with the Tyfo® Advanced Fire Protection (AFP) System, created by the Fyfe Company, is a five-part system designed to, not only minimize heat exposure, but to also provide flame and smoke spread protection.

A major concern regarding the use of composites for structural strengthening is fire. Elevated temperatures during a fire can cause epoxy resins to soften or burn, seriously compromising the structural strength provided by the FRP materials which may lead to failures that could jeopardize the building, building occupants as well as the fire fighting crews.

Tyfo® Advanced Fire Protection (AFP) is used to provide an hourly structural rating for the Tyfo® Fibrwrap System during a fire. The five-part system is Underwriter’s Laboratory Approved for a four-hour rating on columns and beam/slab assemblies.
