Two rectangular section columns were retrofitted with the Tyfo SEH-51 System. The section was kept rectangular by wrapping directly onto the existing column form, rounding the corners on an approximate radius of 1.5in, to avoid stress concentrations at sharp corners. It was recognized that this would be less effective as confinement reinforcement in the flexural plastic hinge zone, but should be fully effective as shear reinforcement. The column tests indicated that use of straight passive wrap on squat rectangular columns can inhibit shear failure of shear-deficient columns, and results in high levels of ductility, despite the apparent lack of effective confinement of the plastic hinge region resulting from the lack of membrane action of the jacket. |
