Commercial, Municipal and Residential Buildings:
The Tyfo® Fibrwrap® advanced composite systems can be used to increase the strength of existing beams, slabs, walls, columns and connections. Strengthening applications typically include seismic retrofit, strengthening due to corrosion, change of use (e.g. commercial-to-residential, the addition of high-capacity filing systems, computer servers, topping slab material, HVAC equipment, heavy machinery, removal of bays and addition of new openings), or in some cases, the correction of an existing defect due to a construction or design error. The Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems have been implemented in hospitals, government structures, churches, schools, parking structures, office buildings, homes, and many other structures. These buildings have been both occupied and un-occupied at the time of retrofit.
The potential structural uses include the following:
- Seismic Retrofit of Structural Elements
- Historic Preservation, Structural Preservation
- Strengthening for Added Loads
- Strengthening for Change of Use
- Rehabilitation of Corroded or Distressed Members
- Repair of an Existing Construction and/or Design Defect
The majority of the structural elements completed have been reinforced concrete and pre-stressed/post-tensioned concrete. However, steel encased members, steel members and wood components (piles, timber elements, glulam elements and truss members) can all be enhanced to some degree.
Fire Protection Alternatives:
The Tyfo® AFP System:
Tyfo® Advanced Fire Protection (AFP) is used to provide up to a 4-hour fire rating as per ASTM E119, for the Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems. A layer of the Tyfo® VG Primer and Dash Cote is applied to the installed Tyfo® Fibrwrap® System. The required thickness of Tyfo® VG is then applied to meet the required UL/ULC design requirements. Tyfo® EI-R is a unique coating which is sprayed over the VG as a final protective layer. The UL/ULC Design Numbers for columns are X842/X824. The UL/ULC Design Numbers for beams and slabs are N790/N811.
The Tyfo® 4HFL System:
The Tyfo® 4HFL System is used to provide up to a 4-hour fire rating as per ASTM E119, for the Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems. A layer of Tyfo® CR is applied to the installed Tyfo® Fibrwrap® System, followed by the required thickness of Tyfo® FC and then three coats of the Tyfo® IM are applied to meet the required UL/ULC design requirements. A layer of the Tyfo® WEB fiber can be incorporated to provide a more smooth final appearance to the finished protective coating. The UL/ULC Design Number for columns is X646.
The Tyfo® FC/F System:
The Tyfo® FC/F Fire-Resistant system is applied in combination with the Tyfo® Fibrwrap® System.
Tyfo® FC/F is a two-part system comprised of the Tyfo® FC base coat and Tyfo® F top coating. (UL
Listing #R15357)
The Tyfo® RR System:
Tyfo® RR System can be applied directly over the installed Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems to provide a Class I (Class A) Flame and Smoke Spread Rating as per ASTM E84. (UL Listing #R15357)
Finishes:
The Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems can be finished to match or have aesthetic continuity with existing elements on exposed structural elements. Almost any existing finish material can be applied directly over the installed Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems. The Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems can be considered a non-porous material in terms of application steps required for other types of finish materials.
Applications that require the Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems to take gravity loads (as opposed to only seismic loads) will most often require a fire-resistant finish. The project architect and/or the permitting official must define the required level of protection. The Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems are the only advanced composite systems to have the following system compatible assemblies in order to provide up to a 4-hour fire rating.
Tyfo® PWC-NSF listed coating for use in potable water applications (NSF/ANSI 61).
Tyfo® HS-Final coating tailored to match the existing concrete, as with a historic structure.
Tyfo® A–Acrylic coating.
Tyfo® U-Urethane coating with low V.O.C. content to give excellent UV protection and durability.
